Answer Collections
Answer Collections are reusable lists of predefined text items (e.g., diagnoses, symptoms, keywords, options). They serve as the source pool for answers in Selection (SE) questions and the evaluable items for Case Study (CS) questions, ensuring consistency and saving time when creating questions that draw from the same set of potential answers.
Using Answer Collections offers several key benefits:
- Consistency: Ensures uniform terminology and options across multiple questions.
- Efficiency: Eliminates the need to repetitively type the same answer choices, saving lecturer time.
- Maintainability: Simplifies the process of finding where specific items are used. Updates to an item are made in one central location (note: the immediate effect of such updates on already existing questions depends on system behavior regarding resource update propagation).
- Enhanced Student Experience: Items within a collection are automatically sorted alphabetically, and students can search through them when answering linked Selection or Case Study questions, which is particularly helpful for large collections.
What is an Answer Collection?
An Answer Collection in KlickerUZH is a named, managed list of text-based items. These items can represent anything you want students to choose from, such as medical diagnoses, anatomical structures, historical figures, or technical terms.
The primary purpose of creating and using Answer Collections is to:
- Provide a standardized pool of options for Selection and Case Study questions.
- Avoid retyping the same set of answers repeatedly across different questions.
- Ensure consistency in terminology and options presented to students.
- Simplify the maintenance of answer choices; updating an item is done in one central place.
- Facilitate student interaction: Items within a collection are automatically sorted alphabetically, and students can search through them when answering linked Selection or Case Study questions.
Below is an example of how an Answer Collection looks in the edit dialog:
Creating and Managing Answer Collections
You can manage your Answer Collections within the "Resources" section of the KlickerUZH lecturer interface.
Accessing Answer Collections

Deleting an Entire Collection
To delete an Answer Collection:
- Navigate to the Overview: Go to the main "Answer Collections" page within the "Resources" section, where all your collections are listed.
- Locate the Collection: Find the specific Answer Collection you wish to delete.
- Open the Options Menu: Click on the three-dot menu icon associated with that collection card.
- Select "Delete": Choose the "Delete" option from the dropdown menu.
- Confirm Deletion: A confirmation prompt will appear. Confirm that you want to permanently delete the collection.
Important Considerations:
- Impact on Linked Questions: Be cautious when deleting a collection. If it is currently linked to any Selection or Case Study questions, deleting it may break those questions or leave them without a valid set of answers. The system may prevent deletion if the collection is in active use or display a warning about affected questions.
- Permanence: Deleting a collection is a permanent action and cannot be undone.
Using Answer Collections in Questions
The primary use of Answer Collections is to provide the pool of selectable items for Selection (SE) questions and the evaluable items for Case Study (CS) questions.
When students encounter such a question, they can search through the items in the linked collection to find and select their answers. This search functionality is especially useful for large collections.
For Selection (SE) Questions
When creating or editing a Selection question:
- Link an Answer Collection: In the question editor, there will be a field labeled "Answer collection" (or similar). Click this field to open a dropdown or search dialog where you can choose from your existing Answer Collections. The number of entries in the selected collection is often displayed (e.g., "MED Diagnosen (936 entries)").
- Specify Number of Inputs: In the "Number of inputs" field, define the maximum number of items a student can select as their answer. Students must select at least one item and can select up to the number you specify here. For example, if you set this to "2", students can select one or two items.
- Define Correct Answer Options: After linking a collection and specifying the number of inputs, fields will appear for you to designate the correct answers. Click each field to select the correct items from the linked Answer Collection. The student's response is considered correct if they select all the defined correct answer options and no incorrect ones, within the allowed number of selections.
For Case Study (CS) Questions
When creating or editing a Case Study question:
- Link an Answer Collection for Items: In the section where you define the "Case Study Items" (i.e., the entities students will evaluate against criteria), you link an Answer Collection. The items from this collection (e.g., Myocardial Infarction, Pneumonia, Pulmonary Embolism from our demo question) become the rows that students will assess using the sliders/inputs for each defined criterion (like Probability or Treatment Cost).
This ensures that the items being evaluated in the case study are standardized and drawn from a predefined list, maintaining consistency if you use the same set of items across multiple cases or questions.
Sharing Answer Collections
Answer Collections can be shared directly with other users or published to the KlickerUZH Catalog for wider use. To initiate sharing for a specific Answer Collection, locate it in the overview list and access the sharing options via its three-dot menu.
